Li'le Hullets is situated in Staveley, a quiet rural village located in between the Lake District towns of Kendal, and Windermere. The village has many picturesque views typical of the Lake District. The photographs below show some of the views in Staveley. Click on the photographs to enlarge them.
A Brief History of Staveley Staveley is located at the intersection of the rivers Kent and Gowan, roughly midway between the Lake District towns of Kendal and Windermere. It was part of the county of Westmorland until 1974, when it became part of the county of Cumbria. Staveley has been inhabited since around 4000BC when Celtic speaking Britons established farms in the area. The Romans built a road around 90AD which passed south of Staveley's current location, linking Kendal with the main Roman fort at Ambleside. The line of this road is now roughly followed by the A591. Staveley was granted a market charter in 1329. The village got its name as a result of the woodworking industry, something which thrived in the area due to the nearby abundance of forests and the proximity of the rivers Kent and Gowan, which were used for processing wood. Staveley means 'field of staffs' (from the Middle English plural 'stave' for 'staf', and 'leye', meaning pasture from Old English leah). In 1338, work was begun on the building of St Margaret's Church by the then Lord of the Manor, Sir William Thweng. The church was completed in 1388 - only the tower remains standing today, and can be seen in the gallery above. The new parish church of St. James was completed in 1865 by J.S. Crowther. There are other places of worship in the village including Wesleyan, Methodist, and Catholic chapels. Staveley CE Primary School was founded in 1755 and moved to Brow Lane in around 1840. Locals put on an art exhibition every year which features work from regional artists. The exhibition frequently includes lectures from notable UK artists.
